TRAY MAKEOVER

As I had mentioned earlier, I hoard collect trays. And I like to customize my trays to the colors I want. In fact, I like to customize anything I can to what or how I want.
I found this wooden tray at the thrift store for $2. This is pretty big in size, 18" x 14". And it was in perfect condition. I could have just stained it and be done.
The tray was in the garage for couple months before I decided where I wanted it and what color. I had this hot pink paint left over from this dresser makeover. I could use the tray on the living room coffee table but it would be too matchy-matchy.
The dining table is big enough to have this tray and the color from the dresser in living room can be pulled to the dining room. I still have half quart of this paint left.
Ok, so after a coat of paint on the tray, I realized I forgot to prime it. Time will tell if I should have primed before I went with the second coat.
A week before I painted the tray, I had picked this fine gift wrapping paper in Moroccan print at Paper Source. I saw this and was very confident the color matched the paint I had decided for the tray. It was $6.50 for a 20x30 size.
When I came home, I held this paper against the dresser and it matched spot-on. (I did not click the pic with the dresser).
To give this tray a little polished look, I did not go the modge-podge route. I took this tray to Lowe's to pick acrylic sheet cut to size.

The paint is semi-gloss, so after second coat the tray had a lacquer look to it.
I rolled out the paper upside down on the table, laid the acrylic sheet on it and marked around the sheet with a pencil to the exact measurement.
Cut the paper, laid it inside the tray and peeled the plastic wrapper on both sides of the acrylic sheet and dropped it inside the tray. Easy.
Now was the time to style the tray. I had this faux flowers in the ceramic vase.

I had to add something else in the tray. I shopped around the home. Found this ceramic petal tea-light holder. Naaa.. it did not look good.
I have this capiz tray. A tray inside a tray????
I had picked this brass bowl from a vintage shop couple of years ago on the way from Disneyland in LA. It was a lonely shop on the stretch of now where and Mr. did not want to stop since there was only one vehicle outside the store. I made him turn around and take me there....(I told him I had to visit the ladies room, he knew I was lying through my teeth).
Inside, the store looked very creepy and was run by an elderly lady. She did have such awesome stuff but I just picked this bowl, paid $3 and dashed out. I need to stop watching too many horror flicks.
I did pick this another cute brass bowl from a vintage store near home. But this one is smaller than the one the above picture.
I did not want to clutter the tray.

I will leave it like this for a while and change if I find something else. Just keep shopping inside the home.
How much did I spend for this makeover?
Tray: $2
Paint: I had. (A 16 oz sample size would be more than enough for this project)
Paper: $6.50 (I still have more than half left): $3
Acrylic Sheet: $15 (I used the left over sheet for 3 more trays) : $4
Brush: I had.
TOTAL: $9
Since I have the acrylic sheet inside the tray, I can change the paper any time.
What do you think about this tweak?
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.

    1. Thank you and you are welcome, Vidya. A fellow blogger (I do not remember who) had used glass and I had liked the idea. But I went with acrylic (both for economic and safety).

  7. Oooooo, I love the idea of the acrylic sheet. Clever clever clever. I've been scoring the charity shops for a similar tray for a while now but I would have mod podged - that must be why I've not found one yet, I needed to see your great tip first!

  8. Hi Reshma~ Greetings from beautiful Minnesota! I first saw your gorgeous pink tray at "An uncommon slice of Suburbia" and found my way to your blog from there. First, that shade of pink is my all time favorite color ever! I love your idea of using wrapping paper bottom and acrylic to protect it. I have a couple wooden trays I've picked up over the years that need sprucing up, and now I know exactly what to do, thanks to you! I just subscribed to your blog too and look forward to lots of colorful projects!

    1. You can find plain trays in Michael's which you can paint to your liking. I pick mine from the clearance racks of Target, Walmart, Ross, TJ Maxx....:-).
