I planned on getting a succulent for the family room since it lacked any green. A succulent, I hear are foolproof. You can not kill them.
I had this IKEA pot. I bought it same time when I had spray painted the pot gold for the foyer.
Keeping the color theme of navy blue and white in the family room, I first spray painted the pot in navy blue left over from the lamp makeover project.
Once the navy blue paint was dry, I taped the top and bottom of the pot.
Then I gave it coats of white paint. After it dried, I removed the tape. It looked good but when I got it inside, I saw that the white paint had seeped into the blue part.
I took it back to garage and sprayed the navy blue paint to cover the white part.
A week later, one night I was watching something on my computer. And I thought, I could do a free hand painting on the pot with white paint.
I kept drawing and kept wiping off. Good thing the blue paint was gloss finish so was able to wipe off the craft paint.
There was a pencil on the table with the eraser on the end. I picked the pencil, dipped the eraser of the pencil in white paint and went about pressing the white paint on the pot forming a dot.
I liked what I saw. The dots did not have to be perfect as long as they were a dot.
Once complete, I bought a succulent and planted it. Confident that I will not kill it.
Two weeks later.
Do you know anyone, who has killed a succulent? Now you know. And I am not proud about it.
I was at Hobby Lobby and when I saw these faux succulents, the first thing that crossed my mind was "there is no way I can kill this". I picked these 2 different kinds not sure which one I liked.
I potted the wider one into the pot with soil and covered with small rocks. I had cut the stem to have the succulent reduce the height to fit in the pot. I had this IKEA pot. I bought it same time when I had spray painted the pot gold for the foyer.

There were few spreads of white paint here and there which did not bother me much.
The white and blue tray is also a DIY. An easy one. Will share it soon.
A before and an after. What do you like, stripes or polka dots?
Have a great week ahead.

Pretty!! Have the same pot from ikea;) love that blue and white tray and for the succulent, I have killed many before I got the hang of it. Looks like overwatering Reshma, they need plenty of sunshine, brightest sunny window sill in your home will work.
ReplyDeleteNayana, Those IKEA pots are so easy to work on. I lost all hopes of growing any kind of plants other than "money plants" in my home....:-). You were the reason for me to get that succulent and gave it lots of love but still it gave up on me.
Deletewow !! uve made the whole process look so simple
ReplyDeleteSmitha, It is a very easy project to do. It's exactly how you make the cooking such an easy job.....:-).
DeleteTis turned absolutely stunning!! Love the new pot and the faux-succulent is a fab idea!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I have only faux and fake plants and flowers in my home.....:-).
DeleteReshma, They r the easiest to take care of. few spoons of water and light will do the trick. Don't give up.
ReplyDeleteArathi, I have one more succulent that has survived so waiting to see how long. Thanks for your tip. Will try to see if I can keep this one alive.
DeleteCool. I am not familiar with that plant though. I am also buying pots - to grow vegetables. Kitchen garden :) Good effort with that spray painting thing.

Rajesh, Succulents are kind of cacti and need very little water to grow. Good luck with your Kitchen garden.
DeleteMe too have killed many succulents earlier and realized they aren't my cup of tea. Planter is nicely done..
ReplyDeleteVasudha, Money plants/Pothos are the only plant that I can grow. So I have them all over the house....:-). I had lots of hope on succulents but the fake will do for now.
